The Knights of St Columba is the largest Catholic family fraternal service
organization in the UK with eight thousand members. It provides members and
their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic
Church, their communities, families and young people.

The
work of the knights is carried out at both a local and national level.
The KSC's successful national 'Wells for Water' campaign,
which raised £277.000 over three years was followed by Projects to support
the 'Help the Hospices' movement over two years which raised in
excess of £109,000 and a Project known as 'Partners for Health'
which
ran until 2005 and raised £140,000. The current National
Action Project known as 'Unsung Heroes' will run until 2008. In
conjunction with the Samaritans, the Knights of St Columba have launched a life-saving
partnership , through a three-year fundraising
scheme.
Locally, the Knights of St Columba undertake various activities to
provide support and assistance to their Communities, families, the
young and the Church. Such service can range from providing financial support for
good causes; sponsoring sporting activities for the youth or giving
freely of their time and energy to enhance the spiritual well-being of the
local community by distributing posters; erecting Christmas cribs in prominent
places;
organising seminars on social teaching; vocation exhibitions and
adopting a moral stance on life issues. Those
less fortunate in society, such as the disabled, people with learning
difficulties and the homeless, also benefit from KSC action. Many
Councils support such groups by providing help with transportation and travel
arrangements, accommodation, running 'soup kitchens' and offering advice to
those in need. As part of the KSC's Keep Christ in Christmas
campaign, Council 104 is responsible for the erection of the Christmas Crib
in Terminal One at Manchester International Airport. Another Crib, seen and
admired by many South Manchester residents, was on display upon the roof of
our club premises during the Christmas period. The children of local
primary Schools are encouraged to participate in designing an appropriate
Nativity scene for a Christmas card; with the winning entries submitted to
the KSC's national competition. The Council also distributes to
Churches throughout South Manchester; the well known Christmas and Easter
posters, with which many Christians will be familiar.
